Welcome to Writing for Money

Welcome to Writing for Money.

This is my personal newsletter where I write about writing, my business, and anything else in between.

If you don’t know me already, my name is Caleb, and I’ve been a copywriter for about seven years now.

I started out doing odd jobs, such as:

  • A small stint as a social media manager

  • A couple of years as a sub-editor

  • Freelance writing on Fiverr and Upwork

In 2021, I started applying for ‘copywriter’ jobs in London, which is when I got my first copywriter job at a fintech company.

That’s where I took this cool picture — from the Citibank building in Canary Wharf 📸

I then had two more jobs after this at finance companies, one at a large bank and another at a business bank card company.

From here, I decided that I wanted to continue growing, but the road started to look a little flat, and I realised the only option for me was to break out on my own.

On New Year’s Eve in 2024, I decided that I was going to go for it, regardless of the consequences.

I scraped together all my marketing and writing experience and decided to package this as an offering to businesses.

I did this on the side of my main job for as long as I could, until I took the plunge in April 2024 and decided to hand in my notice – officially taking the stabilisers off.

Finnus (formerly Caleb Hinton Copywriter) was officially launched in May 2024 (link).

The business is going well, and we’re upgrading every day.

Other things

Since then, I have been working on many other side projects, not including this newsletter.

I might have made my side hustle into my main job, but now I still need the side hustles.

I started a YouTube channel to help beginners become copywriters (link):

What to expect

I’ll be honest – this newsletter has changed like the wind many times.

But I keep coming back to it, so it will always be by me. And in the past year it’s been

Some of my favourites

Here are some of my favourite pieces I have written.

Aficion is about the description of passion, and The Tale of 66 Currencies is about an incredibly niche but concerning problem in SEO and likely LLMs in the future.

Aficion

I’ve just finished Death in the Afternoon and it has changed my perspective on writing and passion. I started reading the book because I was curious about why people had such a love for the cruel sport of bullfighting and also wanted to read some of Hemingway’s non-fiction.

The tale of 66 (65?) currencies

Last year, I was writing some articles on the US dollar, and ended up falling into a deep rabbit hole. If you don’t know what dollar dominance is, you can read about it in my article here: https://www.currencytransfer.com/blog/expert-analysis/what-is-dollar-dominance

My own journey

I’m learning new things every day, and the more years I put into copywriting, the more pockets of it I discover.

There are likely to be random posts about things I’ve done and found, which I hope you’ll enjoy.

Speak soon.
