Helping you write for a living🖊️📈 Journal of a financial copywriter. Everything you need to know about copywriting and how to make money writing.
Welcome to Writing for Money.
My name is Caleb, and I’ve been a copywriter for about six years now. About two years ago I moved into the financial space (a great niche for copywriters if you’re considering it).
I write for banks, fintechs and anything in between, and have been incredibly lucky with some of the opportunities I’ve had.
That’s where I took this cool picture — from the Citibank building in Canary Wharf 📸
I work full-time, but also have a small writing business.
Feel free to stalk me on LinkedIn and see everything I’ve done.
My first steps into freelancing were with Fiverr, which I still recommend all budding freelancers to at least start with.
You can see how much I like Fiverr here 👇
Are you using Fiverr in 2024?
Fiverr is amazing. Upwork is not. Here is why: Why Upwork sucks Okay, it doesn’t suck, but I think it’s significantly worse than Fiverr. Fiverr you post gigs that people then buy. Upwork switches the relationship. So you apply to gigs that people post who need jobs done, instead of you posting gigs and then they purchase it.
But I’ve since moved on from Fiverr.
Now I spend my time writing about money, for money.
Becoming a copywriter
Once I’d built up some small cred with a few years in the workplace, I had a decent portfolio.
This was when I picked the finance niche and began to obtain clients.
I started this newsletter because I wanted to show exactly how you can start writing for money, and the steps I took to achieve it.
My framework is for any copywriting niche, not just finance.
You can write about:
Fitness
Food
Sport
Beauty
Technology
Literally, anything you want, as long as there’s a demand for it. The list is endless.
There are so many companies out there looking for high-quality writers to help them boost their websites and start putting great content out there.
And despite the AI hysteria, the demand for writers is higher than ever.
There has never been a better time to become a copywriter than now.
You might want to check out this post if you don’t believe me.

Does ChatGPT mean copywriting is over?
Probably not. There has been a huge spike in talk about ChatGPT, and most people who understand copywriting and what I do usually follow up with a question about ChatGPT. Some people working in content might have started to sweat a little bit, because on the surface it looks like as of 2023, a computer is doing our job better than us.
And this isn’t a copywriting newsletter where I’ll just be spamming you with a paid course.
I want to provide actual value to copywriters, and to anyone else who wants to read it.
If I’m not doing this, then feel free to tell me.
You can subscribe completely for free.
I post a few times a week usually.
Things to expect
What to expect on Writing for Money.
How to start writing for money
This is the main goal — to explain clearly how writing for money works.
For a long time, I didn’t understand what people were actually paying for, or how to give any value.
I hope that my newsletter teaches you more about what you need to do.
Writing guides
Everyone can always improve on their writing, no matter who they are.
I post about the ways I’ve found to make myself a better writer.
Some of my favourite tips I summarised in this post:
All bad writers are in love with the epic
In Death in the Afternoon, Ernest Hemingway writes about his great passion for bullfighting and explains the afición that drove its popularity. He goes on small tangents about other random things, such as Spanish culture and general writing. In one quote, he comments on what makes a bad writer:
I often write other random thoughts on the writing process, such as this one below:
Aficion
I’ve just finished Death in the Afternoon and it has changed my perspective on writing and passion. I started reading the book because I was curious about why people had such a love for the cruel sport of bullfighting and also wanted to read some of Hemingway’s non-fiction.
How to handle the AI revolution
AI is something that cannot be ignored by writers these days, and it’s a wonderful thing.
I often write about AI and AI tools.
I’ve been creating my own GPT tool called Article Muse.
You’re likely to see some posts about me tweaking and updating it.
Check the first post here:
Creating my own GPT
Did you know that ChatGPT lets you configure your own GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer)? This means that you can basically create a custom ChatGPT, that does specifically what you want it to do without having to get it to where you want it each time.
Actionable guides
I like to create posts that I would have needed five years ago.
I do lots of posts like this, cutting the fat, and creating small guides packed with value:
How to become a copywriter in 2024
For anyone looking to become a copywriter next year, I would like to say for the record that there has never been a better time to become a copywriter than now. Online writing is becoming hugely popular, and people are moving away from toxic social media apps and onto platforms such as this one, where people are creating with a little more purpose, and a…
SEO
SEO is a constantly moving industry.
I like to write about what I personally know as an SEO copywriter.
For example, I ran into this dilemma last year:
The tale of 66 (65?) currencies
Last year, I was writing some articles on the US dollar, and ended up falling into a deep rabbit hole. If you don’t know what dollar dominance is, you can read about it in my article here: https://www.currencytransfer.com/blog/expert-analysis/what-is-dollar-dominance
My own journey
I’m learning new things every day, and the more years I put into copywriting, the more pockets of it I discover.
There are likely to be random posts about things I’ve done and found, which I hope you’ll enjoy.
