Starting on my own copywriting journey, my first step was to begin seeing what other people do and how they do it.
Logically I typed in ‘copywriter’ and began to look at the first few options that came up. LinkedIn is perfect for looking at what people used to do, and finding out their background.
You can also usually see the point where they made the transition too, and that’s useful if you’re trying to break into the industry.
I then discovered that there were a huge amount of creators on LinkedIn, and if I could mould my feed into copywriting tips, then it would be a useful asset to learn from, which is exactly what it’s become.
Nowadays, there seems to be a lot more flak about how cringe and useless it is, but I still think there’s a huge amount of value, but only if you follow the right people.
Three of the best copywriters to start with
In my opinion, these are the best copywriters to follow on LinkedIn if you’re just starting out:
Dave Harland
For entertainment value and also copy tips, Dave Harland is probably one of the best content creators on LinkedIn, and posts genuinely funny content on there, such as his #confusethescammers series where he’ll take scammers on a perplexing journey in his DMs.
His attitude to copywriting and LinkedIn is a breath of fresh air, and my feed wouldn’t be the same without him.
His newsletter – The Word – is also top quality, and you can find that on his LinkedIn.
Jacob McMillen
Jacob McMillen was actually the first copywriter I ever found online, and the first discovery I really made about what ‘copywriting’ really was and the money that I could make from it.
He’s a titan in the copywriting industry, and recently has moved into AI copy, which is essential if you’re worried about ChatGPT and all that.
His course on AI I have just bought, and so far it’s 10/10.
Alex Cattoni
Another copywriter I came across early on, Alex Cattoni really gives you the enthusiasm you need to start writing.
Her videos on LinkedIn are punchy and vibrant and I always click on them.
She also has The Copy Posse copywriting group if you’re interested in joining a community.
Honourable mentions
These are YouTube channels, but massively helped me to get into copywriting.
Location Rebel on YouTube was vital for me in securing my first freelance client. They had a series on cold emailing, which gave me the confidence to start cold emailing clients.
Ali Abdaal is another one. He’s not specifically about copywriting but has been a huge influence in how to make money by writing online. His productivity tips and general positive attitude are also great.
There are many more on LinkedIn that I follow, but as a starting step, the ones I have suggested are ideal to begin with.
Let me know in the comments if you have any other suggestions that I could add.
Next week I’ll be speaking about some of the more nuanced copywriters that I follow and the value they provide in more depth.
